Postions to Perfection
The hardest part about Novice hockey is teaching the basic positions.  It can take months to learn, but once the get it, it's a thing of beauty.

Case in point.  Our weekend of hockey consisted of two games we couldn't wait to play.  The first against the mighty Cougars Black squad and the second against the St. Marys Rock team we beat the weekend before.

Now, one thing I always tell the kids, I don't judge how well we played by the look of the scoreboard.  I watch for effort, team play, sportsmanship, and positions.

In the game against black, we had it all, going back and forth and fighting for everything we got.  We were really starting to get the puck out of our end nicely and had some nice rushes.........all because we were playing our positions.  All in all, a great game was played, but the wheels fell off in the third.......which happens.

On the scoresheet, we had Ethan Bond with 2 goals including a top shelfer off of the cross bar, and Sammy Joseph with his first goal ever!!!!!  Assists went to Connor Noad and Robert Jonkhans.  Of special mention on defence we had Carson Vanderweg giving er all back there thwarting the other teams attacks time and time again.

Our Cougar of the game went to Sammy Joseph who practiced what WE preached by standing out front of the other teams net and drilling a Robert Johnkhans pass into the back of the net.  CONGRATULATIONS SAMMY!!!!

On Sunday, St. MArys came into town shocked the daylights out of us.  We beat them last week, but after one period of play, they were winning 8-1.  But the rest of the way, we regrouped, made some changes and were able tie them 4-4.  Always the positive.  So out of 6 periods of hockey, they have only beat us in 1.  Not kidding.

While our positional play was good, we still have some work to do.......and trust me........there is always work to do when it comes to teaching positions.  So get our heads down we will not.

On the scoresheet, we have Gavin McGahey with 2 goals (should have had about 6), and Jack Harding, Robert Jonkhans (first of the year), and Ethan Bond all getting break away goals.  Assists went to Jack, Sammy, Katie Lunnie, Eriss Doxtator, Spencer Whitney, and Grant Walden.

For the Cougar of the Game, it goes to Grant Walden (on his birthday no less) who played a very strong game on defence.  He was scrapping, digging, and clawing for the puck all day and is really starting to nail down his defensive positioning.  CONGRATS GRANT!!!!!

Thats it for this report.  We have our big tourney in Blenheim this weekend and I can't wait.  GOOOOO COUGARS!!!
