Game 20
Lambeth 2 came to Mount Brydges on Saturday to faceoff against the mighty Goldiggers in our last regular season game. We were hoping for a great game and the all important 2 points to boost us up a bit in the standings. Play downs are a whole new ball game, we just need to be in the right spot to get another shot at beating the best teams in the league. First things first....

It is Watsy's turn to start today in net and Hoefy would finish in their usual rotation. The game started out flat for us, the Lambeth team was out working us and most of the first period was spent in our zone. Ben made it clear he was there to play hard and he made many saves to keep us in it early on. We managed to get through the first period without any goals scored at either end.
Period 2 was much better for us, the kids were skating harder and we started to turn the tables on Lambeth. More time was spent in their end and finally at the 6:55 mark Carson Vanderweg opened the scoring assisted by Konrad Doxtator and Spencer Whitney. This was starting to look like the Goldiggers we haven't seen in a few games. Our fierce determination and hard work was something perhaps Lambeth wasn't expecting after our recent 4-0 loss to them. Ben continued his very strong performance through the 2nd until it was Hoefys time to take the pipes, As Coach Ryan said as Ben skated off the ice "great job Ben, best game all year, well done". Now it was Matt's turn to help us between the pipes and he did just that. Lambeth was working hard try to get back in it and Matt was called upon quite a few times to make big saves which he did through the end of the 2nd and most of the 3rd period.
The 3rd period was more end to end action, both teams were working their butts off and it was anyones game to win. Time was starting to tick down when finally Carson scored his 2nd of the game with 3:50 left to play assisted by Sam Stuart to put us up by 2. This was a real adrenaline boost as Sam was next to score at the 3:07 mark assisted by Carson and AJ giving us a 3-0 lead. It was at this point, the kids started celebrating perhaps a bit too soon. Lambeth was not giving up and managed to answer back only 7 seconds later to make it 3-1 with 3 minutes left to play. They weren't done yet and kept the pressure on. They pulled their goalie and eventually scored on us again with the extra attacker with 35 seconds left to play on the clock. People sometimes ask me why my hair is 3 shades of grey, now you know! The Goldiggers managed to control the puck enough in the final 35 seconds to bring home the 3-2 victory. Wow! What a nail-biter!! Great job Goldiggers!!
This was a very nice way to wrap up the regular season and set the tone for playoff action. In this game we saw great efforts by everyone. In particular, Spencer Whitney did a great job back on the blue line and had a very solid performance as did Spencer Emerick in his new assignment on forward. Nick Sheridan had a great game starting out on left wing then switched to center at the end of the first period, the change didn't phase him, he always says "sure lets go" and gives 110% every shift. Great job guys! If we are to prevail in the playoffs, we will need more of what we saw from everyone in this game.
GO COUGARS GO!
