Game 5
The fifth regular season game of the year was in our barn against an old foe...the Strathroy Rockets Red team. In previous years, the Strathroy Minor Hockey Association always seems to field strong teams and have been known to give the Cougars tough contests. Tonight was sure to be no different and for the first time this season we had our complete team on the bench. Please join me in a giving a big welcome to Konrad Doxtator, our latest addition to the lineup. Your size, strength and grit will surely help the Goldiggers this season! Good luck and have fun this season Konrad!
Now, enough with the formalities, time to recap the game......

It was Ben's turn to start tonight. Matt would take the pipes about half way through the game as is the usual time share plan with both goalies. Each goalie alternates the starts and split each game in half. I like this time share plan as both goalies get to participate in every game as all the players do.
The first period was all us, we seemed to be keeping the play in the offensive zone for most of the period. Our defense were very solid and our forwards were hustling back to help out when the play was coming into our end. We didn't seem to get a lot of quality shots. We saw some very dramatic looking slap shots that resulted in a few wiffle-pucks that missed the mark or didn't quite make it there tonight. The coaching staff was telling the kids on the bench to utilize a strong wrist shot instead of the slap shot. This advice would pay dividends later in the game as the first period would end with no scoring.
We were definitely in the hunt and controlling the majority of the play and it was only 29 seconds after the start of the 2nd period Sam Stewart scored our first goal with the assist going to Zac Fisher. Just under a minute later Carson Vanderweg scored an unassisted goal to put us up by 2. At the 9:42 mark AJ Duffy was next to get on the board with another unassisted goal after a beautiful WRIST shot from the point. Personally, I think someone assisted on these goals but I am going by what the game sheet says just so the kids know how I come up with this commentary. We weren't done in the 2nd yet, with 4:12 left on the clock we saw an amazing end to end rush by Will Stewart and the result was our 4th goal of the period. Again no assists on the game sheet. 4 unanswered goals in the 2nd period put us in a good position going into the final frame.
The excellent team effort continued in the 3rd, at the 12:51 mark Carson Vanderweg rushed in and undressed the goalie with a quick move and slid the puck into the net like a pro for his 2nd of the game. The assists go to Konrad Doxtator and Spencer Emerick. Great job boys! Strathroy managed to answer back with their first of the game with 11:03 left to play. The time would tick away and the game ended with a 5-1 victory for the good guys.
Coach Ryan summed it up the best in the dressing room after the game when he said this game was the result of a very strong team effort with every player working hard. The goalies came up with some big saves when we needed them. Coach Mark Duffy commented that the excellent work ethic displayed at the last practice carried over into the game tonight. The back checking by the forwards was excellent and really helped our defense neutralize the Strathroy offense. Our forwards utilized the defense on the point much better tonight as well.
Great job to everyone! Before I shut up, I just want to say a couple things about some of our players. Braedan Viana, Spencer Whitney, Nick Sheridan, Logan Doxtator, Liam Peters Albert, and Spencer Emerick are all work horses every shift they are on the ice. Sometimes you don't see too many goals but I can't say enough about the contribution they are making game in and game out. Keep up the hard work!
Finally, the kids are loving the tasty treats provided by the Viana family after the games. Thanks so much for the extra off ice efforts to make the season a great one. The team appreciates this very much! As the old saying goes, "we will get out of the hockey season as much as we put into it".
Based on our start, we are gonna have a great year. Keep it going everyone!
