Parents vs Players Game, March 5, 2016
The season is winding down but the fun level is staying firmly set on "High" as the pressure of playoff hockey has subsided. Today our team met for the "Fun Day" at the Caradoc Community Center at 11:00am. The kids enjoyed hot dogs followed by an extra long icetime at Tri-Township Arena. Coach Ryan decided a Parents vs Players game was in order and the trash talk commenced....

Almost all kids were there today ready and willing to take on mom and dad and a dual to the finish. As it turns out the kids intimidated the hockey moms a bit too much resulting in Cindy Stewart being the only mom strapping on blades. Coach Lori and Coach Karen "manned" the doors on the kids bench....or should I say "womened" the doors?
Coach Pat had memories of dis-jointed vertibrae so decided to be the official Trainer and man a door on the parents bench. The stage was set for what would result in an epic battle going right down to the wire!
Starting the game, Watsy had the pipes at the visitors end for the parents and Shane Maddeford had the pipes for the kids at the home end. The kids pulled a fast one and called him up to help out, his massive presence was a true threat and would surely test the skill of the adults trying to score on him. Ben was kept busy early and the kids took the game to the older and much slower parents on the ice. The parents ended the first period down 4-1.
The kids could smell blood....the old folks were having trouble. Kinda like a boxer against the ropes, the punches kept coming fast and furious in the 2nd. The parents resorted to some desperate tactics and drew an unsportsmanlike penalty after Rich Sinclair decided to try and rattle Ben by giving him a good shot of snow in the face. Ben didn't take this lightly and chased Rich all the way to the other end to get even! We thought the ref was out of his mind on the parents bench so we decided to try and slip an extra skater on the ice during the power play......no dice. The "too many men on the ice" call by the crazy ref left the parents in a real pickle and with only 3 skaters on the ice. We managed to dodge the 2 man advantage, Rich Sinclair's penalty ended and as he entered the ice we caught the defence off guard, he got a clear break away on Ben, this was our chance to get back in it! Rich was flying and very determined to beat Ben and narrow the gap. He made a quick move to the left and a fast backhand shot about a foot off the ice which was labelled for the left side. Ben responded with an amazing move with his pads, blocker and stick to shut the door! Rich was shutdown and beside himself! The kids bench went wild! Soon after the parents dug deep and kept pressing, finally Cindy Stewart blasted in a nice goal from in front of the net after several failed attempts.  After 2 periods of play I think the score was about 7-3, pressure was building! "THESE KIDS COULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO SCORE ANY MORE GOALS". It is time to put our game faces on and get down to business.
As the goalies switched ends and the kids were now shooting on Maddeford. The parents were relying on Ben and the 3rd was all or nothing! Take no prisoners was the thought on the parents bench. Mark Emerick was flying and barrelled over his own son Spence. The good news is he caught him before he landed on the ice so no harm was done. This was one of those "only to your own kid" type of plays. Everyone sighed with relief when Spencer landed on his own two feet. Next was the awesome faceoff of Fair vs Fair at center ice! Who would be victorious! Sorry Grant, your boy kicked your butt! Brett won the faceoff then kicked the puck through Grant's legs when Grant attempted to grab his jersey. Brett was off like the wind and deked our much larger adult goalie like a pro. He pulled a Marner move by going left then back right before shooting the puck into pretty much an open net after the gaolie was moving the wrong way. Great play Brett!
The parents were digging deep and narrowed the gap by some nice goals by Dean Thomas, Greg Alcock, Mark Emerick and Coach Ryan. Randy Martin was a fixture in front of the net as well and had some great opportunities. After some creative time keeping and messing with the score the game ended at 8-8. A shootout was in order. The kids reigned supreme and managed to win after 5 more goals to the parents 2 during the shootout making the final score 15-11 for the kids.
Thanks to our Team Manager, Christie Thomas for dropping off tasty TimBits and hot chocolate for the kids to enjoy after the game. Great Job Everyone! See you next weekend, keep an eye on the calendar for more ice time.
What a blast!
