Playoff Game #2, February 13
Holy smokes! The weather outside is frightful, the north wind was blowing hard and Mother Nature seemed to have a chip on her shoulder today. Fortunately we were playing at home and our opponent didn't have far to travel from Lambeth. Our kids made up a new chant saying "we will we will crush you" or something to that effect. I'm a bit supersticous and don't like changing the routine....hopefully we don't jinx ourselves, we'll see? Both teams had our back against the wall in this game....who would come out flying and stay alive in the pool A Division??? We need to bring it.....

and we brought it! The Atom Red freight train steamed over our opponent and played one of our best games all season!
Period 1 was a tough battle with chances at both ends but no scoring. We played well and the team seemed to be playing much better than in the first game.
After 2 and a half minutes of play in the second period Bradyen Martin's tough play in front of the net cashed our first goal after some great teamwork with Tannerr Jarrett and Brett Fair getting the assists. Just over a minute later Aiden Sinclair capitalizes with the assist going to Spencer Emerick. Things were really starting to click and with 4:31 left on the clock in the 2nd Denny Doxtater lets a cannon of a shot go from the point making it 3-0. The assists went to Will Stewart and Brayden Martin. We weren't done yet...one minute later Will Stewart posted one with Dillon Lynch and Aiden Sinclair getting the assists. We still weren't done in the 2nd! With 2;12 left on the clock Denny Doxtater picks up the puck at the point, skates it in a few strides and unleashes another bullet toward the Lambeth net giving us our 5th goal of the 2nd period assisted by Jacob Molnar and Sam Stewart.
The 3rd period started a bit on the scary side, the team had a weak moment and we opened the door a bit allowing Lambeth a break away, they scored their first goal of the game at the 12:47 mark of the 3rd. Just 3 minutes later Lambeth scored again narrowing the gap to a 3 goal differential with lots of time left. Coach Ryan reminded the kids that we need to keep playing hard until the end of the game, we do not want to lay down too soon and allow Lambeth to crawl their way back into the game. The kids listened and the few minutes of complacency seemed to disappear. Ben made some really nice saves a key times helping to preserve the gap. with 3:19 left to play Brett Fair skates the puck into the Lambeth zone and makes no mistake and pulled off a Marner style shot and roofed one unassisted. Then only 8 seconds later it was like dejavue...Brett roofed his 2nd goal in the same manner as the first. That was it folks, these two quick goals took the wind out of Lambeth's sails and the game ended with a 7-2 victory for the good guys.
Other notable performances were by Evan Thomas, Carson Cordeiro, Blake Scatcherd and Tess Alcock who all played hard and really contributed to the win. This was one of the best team performances of the year, we had many good scoring opportunities, nice passing plays and hard work along the boards. We got the puck to the net much better tonight and when that is done good things happen. Maybe the new chant helped, not sure but it didn't hurt that is for sure.
Congratulations team on the great effort, see everyone at practice tomorrow.
