SSE Wild Tournament Champions!!
The next stone has been put in place.

The Cougars accepted an invite to the SSE Wild tournament in London this past weekend. The Cougars had to play a round robin format against Leaside, Cooksville and local favorites the AA Jr.Mustangs White team. The top 2 teams after round robin play. Would face off for the championship on Sunday.

The first challenge was the Mustangs. After being down 2-0 with 6 min to go in the 3rd period. The Cougars could see that the Mustangs were looking tired and they pounced. The Cougars answered back with a goal to make it 2-1 with 5min to go. Then they netted their second goal with 3min to go to tie up the game. With relentless pressure, the Cougars raced down the rink with 34sec to go and netted the eventual game winner to take the lead 3-2.
I thought if this is how the kids are going to play this weekend. We are in for a treat. Boy, were we ever!

The Cougars next challenge was a team from Leaside in Toronto. They were a very tough team. The Cougars jumped to a 2-0 lead early but decided to sit back. Leaside answered back fast and hard. They tied the game and we were left scratching our heads. After the kids calmed down and refocused to the task at hand. They netted 4 more goals to win 6-3.

The Cougars then faced Cooksville and even though the score didn't show it. They gave us a strong go. A well deserved shut out for the Cougar net minder. The Cougars won 7-0.

This mean't we finished 1st and the Mustangs who also won their next 2 games. Finished 2nd. The stage was set. Cougars vs Mustangs.

The game started with the Cougars controlling the pace. The Cougars put many shots at the Mustang net minder but could not score. The first period flew by with no one scoring. The second period started fast and the Mustangs were on. They fired shot after shot at the Cougar net minder but could not find a hole to score. But by the 4min mark of the 2nd they solved our goalie and scored first to take the lead 1-0. The third period started and both teams traded shots to the 7min mark of the 3rd period. The Cougars struck and tied the game up. 1-1. The show down was set and the fans were not disappointed. With both teams trading chances in the 3rd period. The score ended up tied 1-1.

You guessed it, overtime. The format is, you play 4on4 for 1min. Then 3on3 for 1min etc..
With a discussion on who can start. I was forced to send out a line up I was not happy to send. But they worked their tails off and held the strong Mustang foursome to end the 4on4 period. Now I sent out who I wanted. With the play immediately going into their end. We got a shot on net and the Mustangs regrouped and headed out of their end with speed. With a heads up play by our defenceman. He pinched off the pass and the 2 Mustang forwards blew on by him. With a quick heads up pass, he head manned the puck to the forward and race was on. With a quick shot. The goalie saved it but kicked out a big rebound right back to him. He would not miss a second time. He pounced on the puck again and scored. What a goal!!
The Cougars won 2-1 on overtime.

Congratulations to all the kids. Being down in both games against the Mustangs. You never gave up. You were persistent and relentless and you were rewarded because of that.

You just proved that there is nothing you can't achieve if you set your mind to it. Nothing..

Great Job!!
