MIDGET C CHAMPS
Congratulations to the Midget C team on capturing the WOGHL Championship Saturday in Mount Brydges. The girls have worked hard all year and are playing their best hockey when it counts. The team is on a amazing run of 15-3-6 since January 1 riding the strong goaltending of Rebekah Despard-Young.

Our girls defeated a strong Petrolia team in the final with 2 wins and a tie and outscoring their opponent 8-1. Game 1 had the team's leading scorer Gina Toth lead the way in a convinving 4-0 victory. Gina tallied 3 goals and an assist with our Captain Nicole Trbizan getting an important second goal of the game. Other assists went to Shauna Greenwood (3), Kelli Prince (2), Alyson Thomas and Nicole Trbizan. A strong game turned in by Erin McGrath and Lauren Crawford.
Game 2 moved to Petrolia creating a possible elimination scenario for the home team. This was a tense game that was very closely contested. Jess Dias scored the important first goal of the game on a quick release wrist shot in the first period. The goal was assisted by Rachel Frizzell playing on a strong line with Dias and Morgan Prangley. Petrolia tied the game on a goal in the second period setting the stage for a tight 3rd period. The Cougars kept Petrolia off the scoreboard for the third thanks to some solid defensive play by Brooklyne Jones, Sarah Wuytenburg and Ashley Litt. The game ended in a tie sending our girls home for game 3 and only needing another tie to clinch the Championship.
Back home for game 3 and the stage was set for the big game. The team strategy was to play a tight defensive game and use our speed to create scoring chances. This team is fortunate to have 16 hard working players that all contribute in their own way and can play several positions. In this game we needed Meghan Posthumus to move up from D and she played a solid game with a lot of grit and hustle. Maybe the hardest working player in our league is Shauna Greenwood who bagged two goals to help secure a 3-0 victory and the Championship. An important part of this game was getting the second goal to hold back a relentless Petrolia team. In her best game of the year, Morgan Powell attacked the corner taking the puck away from the Petrolia D and fired a quick shot at the net fooling the goalie and giving our girls a 2 goal lead. Another important part of this game was getting through some penalty trouble in the second period. Penalty killers Alyson Thomas and Kelli Prince kept Petrolia in check. Becky continued her strong season with  her second shutout of the finals.
Special thanks go out to my bench staff and all the parents for their support of the team this year. Good luck to the girls as they head to the Provincial Championships in Toronto in 2 weeks.
