John Henry Novice Division 1 Consolation Champs
Novice Blue Are Division 1 Consolation Champs!
After a hearty Christmas break the boys suited up for the John Henry Tournament in Strathroy.
Our first game was at 5:30 on Dec. 27 against Strathroy Red. The team has had success against this team in regular season games.
The team came out flying an notched two goals quickly. Strathroy responded with two and tallied a third just before the end of the first period. The second period was a back and forth battle. Unfortunately, The Red Team added another point.
Gong into the third, the team knew they could pull out the win and came out flying. The extra work provide immediate dividends with a quick goal which pulled them within one. Again, Strathroy quickly responded and tailed their fifth. Not easily defeated the Blue added another goal but ran out of time to pull even.
The result was a 5-4 loss.
Ben Wilson was nominated team MVP with a 4 point game [3 goals & 1 assist].
Our second games was on Dec. 28 against Ilderton Jets Red. The winner of this game would be able to compete for the Consolation Championship.
The Blue sprang to a quick 1-0 lead and held on to it until the second period. Back and forth the teams battled and at the end of the second the Blue were leading 3-1. Going into the third period, the team could feel that the win was close but they still had to deliver 10 minutes of hard working and disciplined hockey.
The hard work paid off with a 3-2 win and a trip to the gold medal game.
Congratulations to Duncan Clubb, who was selected team MVP for game two. His hard work and determination helped lead the team to a victory.
December 29th, Gold Medal game against Ilderton White.
The Blue were eager to win the gold. Duncan Clubb scored within 10 seconds of the opening faceoff. Zach Sibley and Jordan McKeller added one each. The team entered the second period leading 3-0.
The second period saw the White add a single tally.
The third period began with Ilderton adding a quick point and pulling within one goal. The play was in the Blue's zone and Ilderton was putting on the heat. Two minutes flew by before Ben Wilson broke free and added the Blue's fourth goal. That is exactly what the team needed to dig in and guarantee the win. Wilson added another and sealed the victory.
The Blues were officially the Novice 1 Consolation Champs!!!
Congratulations to Jordan McLellar who was team MVP. His strong defensive play helped to secure the win.
