42nd Annual Golden Acres Tournament Champions!!
We put another stepping stone down on the path of our season journey.

The Cougars headed to Blenheim/Ridgetown this past weekend for the 42nd Annual Golden Acres tournament.

The team faced a well prepared Tillsonburg team that came out of the gate flying scoring 2 goals in the first to take the lead. Then Tillsonburg added another to lead 3-0. The Cougars finally woke up and netted 2 goals to end the second period down 3-2. With the momentum they gathered in the second. The Cougars score again to even up the score 3-3 with 9min to go. But the momentum wouldn't last long. Tillsonburg answered right back to take the lead again and then netted an empty netter to seal the deal 5-3.

The next opponent was Port Dover. The Cougars came out quick and scored 1min in the first period but Port Dover answered right back to tie it up only 2mins in. After both teams exchanged chances. The Cougars netted a second goal to end the first period up 2-1. Midway through the second the Cougars put another goal in to give themselves some breathing room. The Cougars added 2 more goals in the 3rd to end the game 5-1.

The team the Cougars were waiting to see this tournament was Ingersoll and they played them next. With no scoring in the first. This game was proving to be a tight one. Both teams exchanged goals in the second to end the second 1-1. The Cougars scored 30sec into the 3rd to take the lead and added another 2min later to lead 3-1 but Ingersoll would not go away. They netted a goal to close the gap to 3-2 and the pressure was on. 30sec later the Cougars scored again to regain their 2 goal lead. But again, Ingersoll answered to make it a 1 goal game with 6mins to go. The Cougars held on to win 4-3.

The tournament rules after round robin play goes as follows. The top 2 teams in each pool play for the championship, the second place teams in each pool play for consolation finals and the 3rd place teams play a 4th and final game. So that meant after losing our first game. The Cougars were pretty much out of having any chance to make it to a fourth consecutive tournament final. Or were they??? We needed help from other teams to beat certain teams for us to have a chance to make it to the championship final. Well with a full moon and Gods will. It happened. We managed to just make it through by points and into the finals we went to face the Dunnville Mudcats.

After a great inspiring pregame speech. I thought the team was ready to play.(they weren't)
After the puck dropped the Mudcats scored 17sec in and then put in another goal in 19sec later. The Cougars really put themselves behind the eight ball. 36sec into the game and we were losing 2-0. Not the start we wanted. The kids settled in and with nerves calming down, the boys started to play. The boys exchanged chances in the first but were still down 2-0 after 1 period. The second period proved to be much better. The Cougars got on the scoreboard early in the second and late in the second to tie the game up 2-2 after two. Making this a 3rd period nail biter. With the Cougar net minder making some key saves and getting some perfect bounces. The scored stayed tied 2-2 right to the last 3 min of the 3rd. With a deke and a quick shot we scored to take the lead and hold off the Dunnville Mudcats 3-2 and take our 4th consecutive tournament championship.

At times it wasn't pretty but you found away to win. The good teams always do.

Well done,

JM
